Teaching kids and working with families in poverty have been a constant in our educational communities. Economically disadvantaged students are often faced with additional learning struggles. So how can educators help to close the gaps?

Schools have a more powerful impact and deeper reach than any other social institution to make a difference with this important group. Together, we will learn and develop our own plan to disrupt poverty and help students thrive!

Presenter Bio

Mike has gained a wealth of professional experiences and insights that he now shares with others through his consulting venture. He concluded a 30-year career in Blount County Schools – nestled between Knoxville, TN, and the Great Smoky Mountains.
Over the years, he has served as a Gifted teacher and a Special Education and Title Administrator. He spent five years as an Assistant Director of Schools and over 20 years as a building-level administrator, including many as a middle school Principal.
Mike is a first-generation college graduate from a rural, working-class factory town. His early years and professional career have also given him experiences and a passion for working with the economically disadvantaged. His accent is authentic, by the way.
