Let’s be honest — when it comes to helping students reach their full potential, social capital matters. The fear of losing it can be a serious barrier for some students, especially students of color. In this course, Colin Seale, the founder of thinkLaw, lays out engaging and provocative strategies for addressing this critical issue.

Description

How do we reach and teach the “cool kids” so that they have an equal shot at their potential? Using current research and provocative examples, Colin Seale, the founder of thinkLaw, engages course participants in a meaningful discussion about how social pressure affects student achievement — especially for students of color.

In this course, Mr. Seale moves the conversation toward practical solutions, focusing on three main strategies for addressing this critical issue:

  • Using active engagement to fight against gaps in social capital
  • Shifting the culture by bridging the gaps for students and their families
  • Laying out the rules of the game and helping students see their unique contributions to the world
According to Mr. Seale, when it comes to opportunities for our “cool kids,” it’s all about designing spaces that tap into the things that move them. He challenges course participants to make sure opportunities like this aren’t limited to a select few while providing the strategies necessary to make it possible to answer the call.

Fantastic course. Course focuses on getting all kids from all cultures to think critically.

  5. Dianne – Gloucester County Public Schools (verified owner)

This was engaging and useful. I think the Freyer study has been supplemented by another that suggests less of a social “cost” for acting white. I also wonder about the way Freyer figured out that black and hispanic kids had fewer friends as a cost of being 4.0 students. Maybe there were fewer same race friends available to kids who are a minority of a minority? I ask this as a minority gifted kid who’s now an adult G/T educator.

  6. Charles – SCHERTZ-CIBOLO-U CITY ISD (verified owner)

Good training that makes you think about how the kids are thinking about what they are doing at school not just the work itself.

  7. Audrey – PFLUGERVILLE ISD (verified owner)

Very interesting! As a middle school teacher this was helpful in understanding the “cool kid” mentality and gave ways to get every kid engaged in their learning.

  8. Julie – SCHERTZ-CIBOLO-U CITY ISD (verified owner)

This was very helpful in building a vocabulary around encouraging students to participate in advanced learning opportunities.
