Of all these stereotypes, one of the most damaging in education today is that students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds are less likely to be gifted. Low verbal skills often mask true giftedness. It’s time to get past the stereotypes and begin uncovering giftedness in our low-SES students.

Description

In this course, Birdie Chesanek offers hands-on ideas to help bridge the gap between verbal and nonverbal intelligence for children from low-SES backgrounds. In this make-and-take session, Ms. Chesanek reviews educational issues that may be present when teaching students from low-SES backgrounds, explores strategies to bridge the gap between verbal and nonverbal intelligence, and then provides plans for using those strategies in various content areas.

In this 1-hour course, you will learn to:

  • Build academic knowledge
  • Encourage learning equality in the classroom
  • Implement verbal learning strategies
  • Build working and long-term memory

Presenter Bio

Birdie Chesanek is a native of El Paso, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1990. She taught adult E.S.L. classes at El Paso Community College for five years and has taught at Oran Roberts Elementary School for the last fifteen years. Since 2009, she has received training by Dr. Joyce Juntune of Texas A & M University on strategies to bridge the gap between verbal and non-verbal skills for students from low S.E.S. backgrounds. She joined Dr. Juntune at the TAGT conference in Fort Worth, Texas as a co-presenter. She is also a presenter for El Paso ISD for the Gifted and Talented program.
