In this course, participants will learn about how TAG (Talented and Gifted) students can be served within the regular classroom without simply “adding more work”. This course offers ideas for creative literature circles, adding depth and complexity, and introducing non-standard problem solving. The presenters share projects and products and include demonstrations of specific instructional activities in language arts and mathematics.

Become introduced to some exciting and innovative ways you can serve your G/T students in a traditional classroom. Not only will you learn the concepts and theory for serving gifted students, but you will also discover specific resources, project ideas, and activities that you can begin using in your classroom right away.In this course you will learn: 
  • The importance of pre-assessing students before accelerating them 
  • How to take a literature circle experience and make it meaningful 
  • The benefits of teaching Bloom’s Taxonomy in literature 
  • Ways in which depth and complexity can be developed in book studies 
  • The importance of “non-standard problem solving” for gifted students

Presenter Bio

Nicole Shannon, M.Ed. has over 19 years of experience in gifted education. She currently serves as the Advanced Academics Specialist for Hutto ISD. Prior to joining her current district, Nicole served as the Coordinator of Gifted/Advanced Academic Services for Round Rock ISD for five years. She was a gifted specialist in Round Rock ISD for 10 years before taking this position. She has presented at the district, local, and state level to preservice and in-service teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents on a variety of topics in gifted education throughout her years in this field. Prior to moving to Round Rock, Nicole served as a teacher, curriculum coordinator, and school principal at private schools in Honolulu, HI, San Diego, CA, and Virginia Beach, VA. Nicole graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development from the University of Texas at Austin and completed her M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership with a specialization in Gifted/Talented at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.

    I love the ideas presented here, however I’m not sure that I can apply this well to my classroom. The amount of time required to implement these outside the box activities would be challenging given the time restraints of my classroom. I am going to try and add some of these in on occasion though because I do think that these are great tools to enhance learning of TAG students.
