Gifted learners often already know much of what is going to be taught during lessons, or can learn the content more quickly than average learners. Join Heather Clark, the Gifted Coordinator for the Licking County ESC for this 2-hour course and learn strategies for determining what students already know and if they are ready to have their learning compacted. Participants will also learn to use tools to organize alternative learning tasks in lieu of compacted content and explore activities and strategies for engaging learners at every level.

If you walked into a class ready to learn new material only to find out you already know all the material, what would you do? Would you drop the class and enroll in something more challenging, or ask your teacher for more level-appropriate material? Our gifted learners often run into similar issues but don’t have the ability to drop classes or seek out more appropriate curriculum. Join Heather Clark, the Gifted Coordinator for the Licking County ESC and learn strategies to help you effectively compact and expand your curriculum to help gifted learners grow, no matter how far ahead of grade level standards they are.

In this 2-hour course you will explore: 

  • The basics of curriculum compacting
  • How to apply key concepts and strategies, including the compactor form, extension activities, and classroom expectations within the classroom
  • Identifying students who would benefit from curriculum compaction

Presenter Bio

Heather Clark has packed a wealth of experience into her 12 years as a professional educator, serving a variety of roles as a teacher and also as a leader through curricular administration. With a masters in STEM education, Heather has worked with and championed for gifted students from the very beginning. She now serves as a Gifted Coordinator for the Licking County Educational Service Center, splitting her time and expertise between two Central Ohio districts. Heather’s experience with urban, suburban, and rural populations make for a well tested knowledge base and a sensitive application of the best educational practices, ones that are both student centered and practical. She lives in Blacklick, Ohio with her supportive husband and two young sons that constantly keep her moving.?
