Hosting a Socratic Seminar is an effective way of helping students feel empowered by their participation in classroom discussions. During this 1-hour course, participants will join Lori Dreyer, the Elementary Gifted Liaison for Springboro 
Schools, and Lindsay Slamer, the Gifted Intervention Specialist for Springboro Schools, to explore the elements and benefits of hosting a Socratic Seminar in their own classrooms.

Description

Socratic Seminars are an amazing way to engage students in meaningful classroom discussions. During this course, participants will join Lori Dreyer, the Elementary Gifted Liaison for Springboro Schools, and Lindsay Slamer, the Gifted Intervention Specialist for Springboro Schools, in exploring the elements of hosting a Socratic Seminar in their own classrooms. After discussing the necessary elements, participants will take a deeper dive into what the classroom environment looks like before, during, and after the seminar and learn about variations of Socratic Seminars, including challenges that may arise.

In this 1-hour course teachers will discover: 

  • The elements of engaging students in a Socratic Seminar
  • How to make the classroom environment conducive to using the Socratic Seminar approach
  • Why Socratic Seminar is an effective instructional strategy to use with gifted learners
  • Possible variations for implementation
  • How to avoid pitfalls

Presenter Bio

Lori Dreyer is the Elementary Gifted Liaison for Springboro Schools. She has worked with students identified as gifted, as well as students with special needs. She has experience collaborating, consulting, co-teaching, differentiating instruction, supporting the development and coordination of gifted services and leading professional development for teachers. In 2006 and 2013, she was honored by the Area Progress Council as Teacher of the Year for Springboro Schools. She was also approved as a Master Teacher by the Ohio Department of Education in 2012.

Lori earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, as well as her Masters of Education in Early Childhood and Early Intervention, and her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, and Early Childhood Generalist and Gifted Endorsements from the University of Cincinnati. At this time, she is also an adjunct professor for the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University, and is striving towards earning her Principal Licensure.
 

Lindsay Slamer is a Gifted Intervention Specialist for Springboro Schools. She has experience teaching kindergarten, collaborating, differentiating instruction, providing gifted services through consultation and co-teaching for elementary gifted learners, and supporting further development of the district’s gifted curriculum. Aside from providing meaningful challenges for her gifted learners in language arts and math, she greatly focuses on providing support for the social emotional development and creative thinking ability of her students.

Mrs. Slamer earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Miami University. She earned her Masters of Education and her Gifted Endorsement from Wright State University.
