Description

Motivating an underachieving gifted student can be tough. Many students have learned habits of underachievement over time and need help developing an intrinsic sense of motivation. This 1-hour course will help you connect with your gifted students and help them modify their underachieving behavior in a positive way. Alesha Haybin, the Coordinator of Gifted Services at the Licking County ESC, will guide you through practical strategies to motivate disengaged, disinterested, or underachieving students in your classroom.
In this 1-hour course you will: 
  • Gain a basic understanding of behavior modification as it relates to motivation
  • Define motivation and evaluate how classroom structures support or hinder motivation in students
  • Explore the roots of underachievement 
  • Learn practical strategies to increase student motivation 
This course adresses the following standards:
NAGC Standards 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2

Presenter Bio

Alesha Haybin is currently a Coordinator of Gifted Services at the Licking County Educational Service Center, and serves as the Scholarship Committee Chair on the OAGC Governing Board and is Past-President of Gifted Coordinators of Central Ohio (GCCO). She has been an educator for almost 20 years with 17 of those working directly with gifted students and their families. She has found the most profound impact can be made as a result of relationships that nurture the social and emotional development of each student while stretching them intellectually. Alesha holds a B.A. in elementary education and a M.S. in educational psychology and gifted instruction. Born and raised in Oregon, Alesha most enjoys going on adventures with her family and visiting the beautiful Northwest.
