“Why do we need to know this?” Have you ever been asked this by one of your students? It can be a true facepalm moment when you realize that your students are not connecting with the material being taught. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a great way to up the engagement of your class and help students find real-life connections with classroom material. In addition, differentiation is easily built into a well-designed project, so you can meet your students’ needs and help them find the “why” in their learning.

Description

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an excellent tool for any teacher to use, but it is especially powerful when working with gifted students. Gifted students need to be challenged to engage further with the material, and PBL is a great way to help students connect their learning to real-world experiences as well as to make cross-curricular links.

In “Using Projects to Maximize Capacity in Your Gifted Classroom,” Todd Stanley shows you how a well-designed project naturally differentiates for each student’s individual needs and progress. That is what makes PBL such a great tool for working with gifted students. The key is knowing how to design a great project and use it to maximize your students’ learning and engagement with the material you are trying to teach.

In this course you will:

  • Understand the benefits of using project-based learning (PBL)
  • See the advantages of using PBL with gifted students
  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the steps of PBL
  • Begin to create your own PBL lesson that can be used in your classroom

ODE Teacher competency: a, b, c
NAGC Teacher Preparation Standard: 2.1, 2.4, 3.4
