Description

Tiered lessons are a way that educators can differentiate in their classrooms in order to meet the needs of each student. Many educators understand the theoretical concepts of tiered lessons but struggle with actually implementing them. This course from the Ohio Gifted Organization will help teachers dive deep into tiered lessons. 

In this 3-module course, Ms. Chaffins will lay the groundwork for building tiered lessons using strategies from top educators. To help illustrate these concepts, she has invited Brian Krawetzke and Mark Suter to share the lesson strategies they’ve used in their own classrooms. 

Educators will learn about:

  • Dr. Tomlinson’s differentiation methods
  • Norman Webb’s Depth of Knowledge 
  • Karin Hess’s Extended Learning Strategies
  • Practical examples of how to apply these strategies in the classroom

Presenter Bio

Judy Chaffins has worked in education for thirty-five years. She began teaching first grade and later became a Gifted Intervention Specialist serving third through eighth grades. As a Gifted Coordinator, she has coordinated quiz bowls, spelling bees, served as a liaison with a county-wide business/education partnership, taught a graduate level course on assessment as an adjunct instructor at a local university, and conducted numerous local and regional professional development trainings. She has been active in the Ohio Association for Gifted Children including serving as President, as well as many other leadership roles to advocate for the needs of gifted children. She made many trips to Washington D.C. and the Ohio Legislature to testify for appropriate services and funding for gifted students. 

Brian Krawetzke has been teaching Visual Arts in the Lima Shawnee Local School District since 1999. He is a 1998 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a B.A. in Art Education. He has studied art history in Rome, Italy. Brian has presented a wide variety of educational workshops throughout the state of Ohio. He has received numerous educational awards while his students’ artwork has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally. He currently teaches AP Art History, AP Studio Art, Drawing & Painting, Digital Photography, and Yearbook. 

Mark Suter has served as computer science, game design, and entrepreneurship teacher for over a decade. He is the director of a student-run business (Grit9.com) which provides web design services for area businesses. Mark won the 2017 District 1 Ohio Teacher of the Year Award, The 2015 Henry Ford Innovation Nation Innovative Teacher Award, and is an Adobe Certified Associate Educator and Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert.
