Description
When you work with students who have profound disabilities, you will very likely encounter students who struggle with prompt dependency. Not only can prompt dependency cause inaccurate data collection, it can also greatly impede a student’s learning and steps toward independence. What matters most when working with a student who has become dependent on you to do something they are perfectly capable of doing themselves is to make them less reliant on your prompts.
In this 45-minute course, experience SPED educator and curriculum writer Ayo Jones details prompt dependency and learned helplessness in students with disabilities. If you work with students who have an IEP or who are working on executive functioning, this course will help you support their move towards increased independence.
In this course you will learn:
- What prompt dependence and learned helplessness are
- The hierarchy of prompting
- Ten evidence-based practices to reduce prompt dependence
- How to remove yourself from a student’s task sequence
