Ms. Barry, who has been using Holocaust education to teach tolerance, inclusion, and equity since 2003, has developed phenomenal, easy-to-use lessons that can be incorporated into the existing curriculum for any grade level. She developed her own Reading Comprehension Strategies Workshop after working with struggling readers for several years. Her strategies create simplified ways to understand difficult reading comprehension concepts such as text structure, author’s purpose, summarizing, and many more.

Presenter Bio

Lisa Barry has been a classroom teacher since 1993. She has taught all subjects in kindergarten through 6th grade and provides professional development lessons to teachers of all grades. Lisa has won several awards for her work in and out of her classroom, including the Hope for Humanity Educator Award, the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Education, the Youth Mentor and Leadership Award, and was a top 3 finalist for the 2021 Texas Teacher of the Year. She specializes in reading comprehension strategies; teaching tolerance, empathy, and equity to all grade levels; and how to use lessons of the Holocaust appropriately in all grade levels. In 2018, she worked with a group of women to create a Holocaust Education Bill in the state of Texas. With the support of Texas Senator Jose Menendez, and after an incredible testimony before the Texas Senate Education Committee, which voted unanimously in favor of SB 1828, the Holocaust Bill was signed into law on June 12, 2019. About ? of the states in the U.S. have Holocaust Education Laws. Mrs. Barry, who has been using Holocaust Education to teach tolerance, inclusion, and equity since 2003, has developed phenomenal, easy-to-use lessons that can be incorporated into existing curriculum for any grade level. She developed her own Reading Comprehension Strategies Workshop in 2006 after working with struggling readers for several years. The strategies she teaches create simplified ways to understand difficult reading comprehension concepts such as text structure, author’s purpose, summarizing, and many more. The strategies involve creating memory hooks for the students, which in turn allow them to take ownership in their own comprehension, increasing their comprehension ability and, consequently, their confidence and self-esteem!
