The Depth and Complexity Framework is an approach to curriculum differentiation that helps students dig deeply into a concept and think about it critically. In this lesson, Kim Tredick provides an in-depth introduction to the Depth and Complexity icons, visual prompts that serve as critical thinking tools. The icons are foundational to the Depth and Complexity Framework. 

Ms. Tredick covers the following in her presentation:

  • A brief history of the Depth and Complexity Framework
  • An introduction to what differentiation is and why it’s needed
  • An explanation of the Depth and Complexity prompts and their icons 
  • Examples of easy ways to implement the icons
By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to identify ways that you can implement these prompts and their icons, enabling you to appropriately challenge your students in every subject.

Presenter Bio

Kim Tredick is currently the Director of Student Support Services in Castaic School District in Southern California. She has served as lead curriculum writer for J Taylor Education over the past seven years and has been using Depth and Complexity for two decades as a teacher, principal, and district administrator. Kim is the author of the best-selling Differentiation Smart Reference Guide, which is used in over 30,000 classrooms. As one of the original participating educators during the first PD rollout of Depth and Complexity in the 1990s, Kim’s training provides teachers with practical best practices for using all the components of the D & C Framework.

    At first I was unsure whether icons were something that was limited to one state or one grade band. At the end, I could think of several ways in which I could use the icons to meet goals of differentiation. I only gave the course a 4 because listening to each group presentation was not effective for me to understand the icon’s meaning. That segment, however, may be beneficial for others.
