If students cannot remember what they are being taught, then they cannot learn. While this is a rather obvious statement, it holds the key to academic success for students from low-income backgrounds. Research has shown that verbal memory is an area where these students lag behind their peers, making it difficult for them to keep up with day-to-day learning tasks. This compounds into big achievement gaps over time. In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty – Developing Memory, Dr. Joyce Juntune equips teachers with knowledge and classroom activities to help these students grow their memory capacity.

Description

School is for the most part verbal. It makes sense that students whose verbal memory skills are deficient would struggle. Research shows that is exactly the case for students raised in poverty. They tend to score strong in nonverbal intelligence but lower than their peers in verbal intelligence and verbal skills. In the classroom, this means they have a hard time remembering instructions, and they struggle to remember content.

The first step in building verbal intelligence is to help students develop memory skills. In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty – Developing Memory, Dr. Joyce Juntune imparts practical knowledge and easy-to-implement memory activities. These strategies help students learn how to remember things, build on their natural memory skills, and help them build capacity in the classroom.

In this 1-hour course, teachers will learn:

  • The connection between memory and building intelligence Strategies for developing memory
  • Memory activities such as sketching and sequencing
