Using visual memory helps students build verbal skills. Research shows that 10% of information imparted verbally can usually be remembered. When paired with a visual, retention goes up to 65%. Mindsketching is a visual memory strategy that helps students build memory and verbal skills by using simple sketches. For students from low-income backgrounds, whose verbal skills are already below those of their peers, this is a powerful tool to help build skills in areas where they are weak or struggling.

In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty: Practicing Mindsketching, Dr. Joyce Juntune explains why this strategy is so effective for low-income students. Dr. Juntune provides many ways to use this strategy in connection with content already being used in the classroom, such as in reading exercises and writing exercises, and in groups.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Joyce Juntune is a renowned consultant, trainer, professor, and lecturer with more than 45 years of experience in the field of education. She is an instructional associate professor at Texas A&M University, and she teaches graduate-level courses in her expert areas of intelligence, child and adolescent development, educational psychology, giftedness, and creativity. She has focused the majority of her career on the areas of intelligence and gifted and talented education. Dr. Juntune has served as the executive director for the National Association for Gifted Children and the Institute for Applied Creativity at Texas A&M University.
