In education we spend a lot of time discussing the “How?” and the “What?” of teaching. After all, without those two things, we wouldn’t have anything to teach. However, there is a third question that is equally valuable in getting our students to engage with the material: “Why?” Why do we teach what we teach? Why is it important? In order to connect with students’ motivations, we need get to the heart of why we are doing what we do. In “What’s In It For Me?” teachers will learn strategies to connect students with why the content they are learning is important and relevant.

This course specifically addresses the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS).

Description

In order to connect with the people we work with, author Simon Sinek states that we need to get to the “Why?” of what we are doing. The “How?” and the “What?” are the body of Sinek’s “Golden Circle,” but the “Why?” is the heart. In teaching we can call this an intrinsic motivation for learning — finding out what is important to students and then connecting learning to those internal motivators.

In “What’s In It For Me?”, teachers will learn how to connect this strategy to T-TESS Planning Dimension 1.3 and will learn four specific tools for accomplishing that goal. These tools can be used in planning any lesson, across subject areas and grade levels.

In this 1-hour course, teachers will learn:

  • How connecting students with the “Why?” fulfills T-TESS Planning Domain, Dimension 1.3 by creating compelling lessons that connect to the social-emotional needs of students
  • Why creating relevance is essential for investment in the curriculum
  • Tools for creating interesting and compelling lessons that will foster students’ intrinsic motivation

This course specifically addresses the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS).

Presenter Bio

David Sebek is co-founder of GT Innovators which was formed in 2011 by three educators who wanted to change the world of professional development for teachers. David has been offering unique professional development solutions to school districts in and around the Texas Gulf Coast Region. Mr. Sebek was the 2011 TAGT State Teacher of the Year for the Gifted and have coached various problem solving teams to Regional, State and International Competitions through Destination Imagination and Future Problem Solvers. 

Joe Bernhart is an author, speaker, and expert in researching and implementing curriculum with a focus on creativity, differentiation, and the social/emotional needs of GT students with an ever-developing expertise on their nature and needs as well. Building on over a decade of previous experience working in an inner city middle school in Houston ISD as a teacher, English department chair, parent coordinator, and Title I coordinator, Mr. Bernhart’s expertise transcends and traverses content areas and demographic definitions, allowing him to be part of a team that offers high quality professional development to meet the diverse needs of teachers in diverse settings. 

Troy Drayton has thirteen years of experience teaching in public schools, with 8 years as English/Language Arts (ELA) Department Head. Mr. Drayton has a Bachelor’s degree in English Composition and Language with an emphasis on Linguistics and a minor in Music from the University of North Texas. He completed his Master’s degree in Administrational Leadership and Supervision from the University of Houston in 2008, but has remained in the classroom because teaching is his true passion.

    Good info, would have enjoyed it a bit more if it was geared more towards elementary. The examples are geared more towards the upper grades. I wasnt able to connect with this training. I realize that they are only examples and that I can use this for my 2nd graders but I like videos I can connect with.

    I really enjoyed this session. It is extremely important for students to make personal connections and see relevancy in their work. This session gives ideas of how to accomplish that on a regular basis.
