Description

When supporting students with dyslexia, it’s important to see them as a student first, and then as a person with a learning difference. In this lesson, Lisa Van Gemert (Gifted Guru) takes this as her starting point, providing educators with ideas for recognizing their students’ strengths while supporting students in the areas that are most challenging for them.

Ms. Van Gemert walks through each idea category by category:

Some of the ideas shared include the following:

  • Emphasize visuals whenever possible
  • Highlight key words in instructions
  • Use hands-on demonstrations and field trips
  • Utilize guided notes
  • Pay attention to the format of assignments
In addition to the lesson, Ms. Van Gemert provides three tutorials where she demonstrates several of the ideas discussed in the lesson.
