Description

In her course, “Misdiagnosis, Dual Diagnosis of the Gifted,” Lori Comallie-Caplan shines a light on the overexcitabilities and tendencies of gifted students that can be mistakenly diagnosed. She explains how the normal, healthy function of a gifted brain can look like behavioral and mental health disorders.

In this course, participants will:

  • Learn to distinguish between true disorders and normal gifted overexcitabilities
  • Gain insight into the intensity, sensitivity, idealism, perfectionism, order, and activity that characterize gifted brains
  • Be better able to meet the needs of gifted students with overexcitabilities
  • Discover how to support students without stigmatizing them

This course is aligned with NAGC Teacher Preparation Standards 7.1, 7.2, 7.3.

Presenter Bio

Lori Comallie-Caplan is a New Mexico Licensed Master Social Worker and a Licensed Educational Diagnostician with a Masters Degree in Psychological Counseling. Additionally, she holds Advanced Certification for Mediation from the University of New Mexico School of Law. Ms. Comallie-Caplan has 30 plus years of experience in the field of counseling, coaching evaluation, mediation and educational consultation. She is best known for her work with gifted individuals through the lifespan and frequently provides professional development for school districts and mental health professionals in the social emotional needs of the gifted.

    Recognizing these and other disorders is only the beginning. I would prefer to hear some strategies that worked for teachers, not central office personnel. Diagnosis is important, but our responsibility doesn’t end there.

    This course goes over a lot of diagnosis that affect children and adults. It explains how gifted students can be misdiagnosed and how we should know the difference. This will help me to understand my gifted students better and also recognizing if a child is gifted, has another diagnosis, or both.
